Original class of Pleasant Valley School, Rose Twp. No. 2.
Sept 5, 1883  -  Morges, OH
Number 2 was off Clay Road and was begun
by a group of men in 1834.  The Morges
School was Number 6.  There were 9 one
room schools in Rose Twp. and for a while a
2 room high school that was located not far
from Harmony Methodist Church.  This high
school was supposed to rival both Dellroy
and Magnolia High Schools.  It was in
existence in 1922.  From the early 1900's
the Number 9 school had a large number of
students because of Blocktown, the
housing provided by National fireproofing
(brickyard).  The Italians lived there and
their children would have gone to number 9.

Just over one-fifth of those attending the first-ever reunion for the Old Number Two School had actually attended
as a child.  Others came as guests to help celebrate the memory.  From left to right in the front row are Wilma

(Halter) Shalosky of Magnolia; Anna (Knudsen) Fetters of Waynesburg; Dorothy (Marker) Arth of Waynesburg;

of Carrollton.  (Second Row) Irvin Little of Dellroy; Steve Papai of Dellroy; Clifford Marker of Morges; Bob Casper of
Canton; Joe Scuti of Canton; Pete Csuti of Wisconsin; Albert Burkhart of Malvern; Harry Burkhart of Morges;

Philadelphia.

Mostly they showed up at St. Mary's Catholic Church Hall in Morges as guests of the few who had actually spent some time there
as a student.
Perhaps it isn't so surprising when you consider that the Old Number Two was last used as a school in 1934.  After that, students
from the rural area served by Pleasant Valley Number Two (its official name) were dispersed to Magnolia, Waynesburg and
Dellroy district schools.
In it's heyday, however, the Old Number Two School had as many as 52 students in grades one through eight - all at the same
time and in one room.
The building has since been dismantled and pieces of it used to build a garage in Morges near Waynesburg.
When it stood as a school, the Old Number Two was located in Section 9 of Rose Township.
It isn't known how long it was used as a school before 1934, but records indicate it was in operation in 1874.  The deed to the
property records it was leased to the Rose Township Board of Education by Sarah Brown on April 14, 1891 for $50 a year.
Among the conditions of the lease was the clause, "...premises shall be used and occupied in a careful, safe and proper
manner...the fires therein to be kept shall be safely secured, kept and conducted."
